Our pathways programs provide flexible options to suit diverse interests and goals, helping you prepare for further education, training, or employment.

External Vocational Education and Training (EVET)

What is EVET?

External Vocational Education and Training (EVET) courses allow students to access vocational education and training delivered by external providers, such as TAFE NSW and other registered training organisations, alongside their school studies. These courses provide additional subject choice and offer industry-recognised skills and qualifications.

Why Choose EVET?

EVET gives students access to specialist training in areas not always available at school, such as automotive, beauty, animal studies, electrotechnology, and more. Students gain practical experience and credentials valued by employers, creating pathways to further education, employment, or apprenticeships.

How it Works

Students attend classes at the external provider’s campus or online, while continuing their regular school studies. EVET courses may count towards the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and may offer credit for further training or university.

TAFE delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

To broaden the range of VET courses available to school students the NSW Government has approved a panel of quality Registered Training Organisations to deliver a wide range of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) endorsed VET courses, one of these being TAFE NSW.

All courses can contribute to the Record of Student Achievement (RoSA) or the HSC, as well as lead to the award of a nationally recognised VET qualification.

How do I apply for a TVET course?
To apply, you will need to speak with the Careers Adviser (Mr Williamson). It is a good idea to talk to him about your career goals as early as possible. Expressions of interest usually open in term 2 of the year before you start and close mid-year, so ensure you start the conversation early to secure your spot.
How are TVET courses delivered?

TVET courses have the same NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements as other HSC courses. This means you will need to attend classes regularly and complete all assessments. Most courses take one to two years to finish. Some classes may take place outside of school hours or include a work placement.

You can study at a TAFE NSW campuses, on your school campus, or online via a Connected Learning Centre (CLC). Some courses also offer block delivery, which might involve study time during your school holidays.

What is work placment

Work placement is a mandatory part of many TVET courses. It gives you the chance to apply the skills you have learned in a real industry setting. Work placement helps you:

  • Gain insights into your future career
  • Make informed decisions about further training
  • Build the practical skills that make you more employable

TAFE NSW will help find a work placement for you, or you can suggest an employer you would like to work with.

How does my TVET course contribute towards my HSC and ATAR?

All TVET courses count towards your Record of School Achievement (RoSA) if you meet the course requirements. Stage 6 courses for year 11 and 12 students contribute credit towards your HSC.

Some Stage 6 courses also include an HSC examination, which allows the course to contribute to your ATAR. If an ATAR is important for your future plans, please discuss your options with your school’s VET Coordinator.

How does my TVET course contribute towards my future study and career goals?
If you successfully finish a TVET course and want to keep studying at TAFE NSW, you may be eligible for credit. This means you will not have to repeat any units of competency you have already completed. It is a great way to fast – track your way into a higher qualification.
