Languages

In NSW high schools, languages is a key learning area.

Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.

The study of a language is compulsory for 100 hours in one continuous school year from Year 7 to Year 10, but preferably in Years 7 or 8.

In Years 11 and 12, we offer a wide variety of languages, catering for beginning students to background speakers, through our partner language distance education school, the NSW School of Languages.

NSW SCHOOL OF LANGAUGES

NSW School of Languages (NSL) is the leader in the teaching and learning of languages through distance education. We provide a broad range of language choices for students across NSW.

Through a specialised distance education program, students develop not only language skills but also valuable independent learning and organisational abilities. These skills are essential for success in further study and future careers. Our structured approach supports students to consistently achieve results above the state average.

We offer 12 languages through flexible learning options, including a full immersion day once a term and comprehensive online programs that make language study accessible to all students across New South Wales. Our courses are carefully designed to meet student needs and are delivered by highly experienced and passionate language teachers.
